Mokum Design Director, Stephanie Moffitt interviews Mokum studio’s Product Coordinator Annie Moir, about their recent trip to Turkey. They discuss their product development meetings with textile mills and a little down time in the enchanted land of Cappadocia.
We love Turkey!

SM - Annie tell us about your history with the company? When did you join the Mokum studio?
AM - Growing up in the family business means at some stage in time I’ve worked in most departments of the company! After graduating university early 2012 I made the move up to Auckland to join the James Dunlop studio. The past two years have seen my role morph to encompass a range of duties & projects, all predominately product based. In June this year Stephanie offered me a role in the Sydney based Mokum studio, two weeks later I was here!
SM - We spent a week in Turkey visiting mills - reviewing designs, sourcing new constructions and doing on the spot colour development. How did you find it?
AM - It was great to see first hand, the mills we deal with on a daily basis. The breadth of their new ranges was a sensory overload, we were like kids in a candy store! As each mill operates 24/7 we were able to achieve an incredible amount of colour development while we were there, making this trip invaluable.

SM - What makes Turkey such an important producer of textiles for the Mokum brand?
AM - The premium mills we visited can provide affordable and stunning constructions with specialist finishes, they’ll work with our own designs and enable us to create custom colour palettes. The quality of their work is of the highest standard and we love their ability to be malleable, working in partnership with us to achieve the custom designs we envisage for the Mokum brand.

SM - Over the weekend we travelled to Goreme, Cappadocia - what was your favourite activity?
AM - It was amazing to spend our weekend exploring Goreme in Cappadocia! It’s a truly magical place, the surreal rocky cave landscape makes you feel worlds apart from Australasia. On Sunday morning we went 1000m sky high in a hot air balloon which was definitely a bucket list experience! Watching the sunrise over Goreme’s beautiful Rose Valley gave us added inspiration for a new 2016 Mokum collection – stay tuned!

SM - Once our work was complete I headed home to Sydney and you travelled on to one of my favourite cities, the historic Istanbul. What did you experience while there?
AM - Istanbul is incredible! Its rich history can be felt as you wander around the city – in the people, the architecture and of course the food! I was lucky enough to be able to explore both the old town and modern Istanbul and fell in love with the colours and smells of the old spice market, the chaos of the Grand Bazaar and the breathtaking city views from the Bosporus strait which lies between Europe and Asia!
