Ask the Editor | Homestyle

What trend has surprised you over the last 12 months?
It’s not so much the trends themselves that surprise me, but rather the way they spread these days via social media. Pineapples are the new owl, and linen is the new Egyptian cotton. I’m surprised that chevron has stuck around as long as it has.
Tell us about an interior that you have featured in your magazine that has particularly resonated with you.
I’m loving the cover home of Kate and Mal Heppell that features in our current October/November issue. They bought a dilapidated beach shack in Point Lonsdale, Victoria (Australia) and have undertaken a mammoth renovation combining their creative talents - Kate is co-owner of Kip & Co, and Mal is a landscape architect. The results are a perfect combination of modern simplicity, layered with colour, eclectic furnishings and art to exude personality.

What do you predict we’ll see a lot of in 2015?
I’m right into bespoke interior options at the moment - from small scale projects such as having cushions made in your own choice of fabric, through to commissioning custom furniture pieces from local designers. I love that people are getting braver with their design decisions, and really owning how they decorate their homes.
Which fabrics from JDT are you loving right now?
We’ve been looking ahead to our summer issues, and I’m a little bit obsessed with outdoor fabrics. I’m dreaming up ideas for an outdoor room with the Resort range by Mokum using the sheer outdoor drapery Atoll in colour Driftwood and a low slung lounger covered in Hula, colour Pacific - creating an evening space for dining alfresco. And I do love the new painterly range by Bluebellgray - Fiona’s watercolour textures really come alive. (Pictured below)

Who are the people that are inspiring you most on Social Media at the moment?
The Design Files (www.thedesignfiles.net) is a daily source of inspiration, and on instagram I’m currently obsessing over the picture perfect photography of Mr Paddington Bear (@mrpaddingtonbear) - don’t be fooled by the name, Megan Morton (@megan_morton) makes everyday beautiful and The Selby (@theselby) will have you coveting the lives of others.
How would you sum up your own personal style?
I’m a little bit of a chameleon when it comes to my own home, I fall in love with new ideas every time we work on a new issue of homestyle. I do prefer a neutral backdrop though, it makes adding and subtracting everything else easier.
